Spring 2025 Newsletter

Spring 2025 Newsletter

Welcome to the Spring edition of my Well Being Newsletter!

We survived! We got through a cold and wet winter and now we will move to lighter days, longer evenings and hopefully a bit warmer weather. I don’t know about you, but it seems winter feels like a time to hibernate. Pyjamas on when home, hot chocolate at the ready and I love hot soups and stews at that time of year.

But now we are coming out of the cold zone and small buds can be seen on trees and daffodils are coming out. How has your winter been? Are you like me and just hibernate at home? Or do you enjoy going out and visiting Christmas markets, seeing friends, etc?

NEWS: I have spend a few days on a very intensive training course to enable me to use EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy.

You may or may not have heard of this but this therapy has been evidenced and researched to be very successful for people who suffer from trauma. Trauma like PTSD, rape, sexual assault, road traffic accident, experiencing a natural disaster, anxiety disorders, depression, pain, childhood abuse/trauma, etc.

It also has shown great results in curing phobias. Fear of spiders, snakes, frogs, fear of flying, fear of dogs/cats, etc. This is not suitable for all and there is an intake process to ensure this type of therapy would work for you before we start therapy. Watch a video here on what it is and how it can help people. Or for more information please contact me to book and assessment to see if EMDR would work on you and the trauma/phobia you struggle with. The session is usually 60 minutes and is on a weekly basis.

The last couple of months I have seen an influx of couple counselling. Being in a relationship is hard work at times. You are two individuals with your baggage from previous relationships, your values and beliefs and at times childhood situations which can make being a couple tough going at times. Then there is the background of your parents and their parents. It can be tough working through this stuff but sometimes it is much needed to help your relationship come out of crisis and into encouragement and support.

Humans are social beings, and a loving relationship can make a couple of individuals very content. But there can be difficulties. One partner may have strayed, and the couple are trying to rebuild the trust and are unsure if this can be moved on from. If there is no infidelity but what attracted us to our partner when we met, has over time, become a frustrated trait. People change, all the time. We grow, we succeed, we fail, we lose significant others, and our partner is there to turn to for comfort or support. Sometimes this growing, pulls the partnership apart. New friends, new interests, changes in goals are all possible ways the couple have to navigate a way to get through this.

When we are in the ‘honeymoon period’, we do not see potential difficulties. Looking through rose-tinted glasses everything looks happy and promising. Both parties try hard in the beginning to get to know the other. We go on dates, we communicate, we are respectful, and we listen to our partner. In time we find out we have an emotional, physical and intellectual connection which looks like this could have real potential. This ‘honeymoon’ period can last from 6 months to a year.

If all goes well, we start to make future plans, we move in, have a family, meet partner’s family members. In time we find ourselves settled in a home with your significant other with or without children and somewhere somehow tensions start to brew. You both may not communicate, or just not as well, you both start to feel frustrated with your partner or you feel stuck. Suddenly what attracted you as not so great anymore. The partner you met was fun, like a child at times and has a great sense of humour. This partner finds it hard now to be serious and address issues at the heart of the relationship and what was attractive at first is now not so attractive. Or two people just are going there separate ways. There are many reasons couples seek counselling, but most involve: infidelity, poor communication, abuse, meddling in laws, parenting, jealousy, financial problems, job stress, substance abuse or a disillusionment with the relationship. These are the top ten.

Once a week, a couple would see me to discuss the relationship. There will be various ‘homework’ assignments which are done in the week before the couple return back to me. These exercises will help the couple rebuild their connection. In the sessions we focus on communication, listening, resolving conflicts and addressing what happened in the week.

Get in touch if this is something you may want help and support with.
