What if you can help yourself with pain management which does not involve medication?

What if you could finally rid yourself of phobias? Fear of flying, fear of clowns, fear of frogs, spiders, etc?

This treatment has been researched and found to be very effective for all of the above.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) focuses on the individual’s present concerns. EMDR processing helps you break through the emotional blocks that are keeping you from living an adaptive, emotionally  healthy life. It is used to treat trauma related symptoms like PTSD.

EMDR uses rapid sets of eye movements to help you update disturbing experiences, much like what occurs when we sleep. During sleep, we alternate between regular sleep and REM (rapid eye movement). This sleep pattern helps you process things that are troubling you.

EMDR replicates this sleep pattern by alternating between sets of eye movements and brief reports about what you are noticing. This alternating process helps you update your memories to a healthier present perspective.

What makes this treatment different to other therapies?

EMDR focuses on the brain’s ability to constantly learn, taking past experiences, and updating them with present information.

Adaptive learning is constantly updating memory network systems

Past emotionally-charged experiences often interfere with your updating process.

EMDR breaks through that interference and helps to let go of the past and update your experiences to a healthier present perspective.

What happens in a session?

This process does need more time, so a 90 minute session would be advisable, however 60 minutes may be sufficient. An assessment will be done to check if EMDR would give you a good result. A lot of questions will be asked to attain if EMDR would be appropriate for you. Sometimes we will not get to the trauma processing part in the first session as there is a lot of ground to cover to give you the best chance at success with this treatment. If we deem EMDR would be suitable then we work on the trauma and we use eye movements, or tapping to enable you to put the trauma memory into the memory stores so it is filled correctly and does not create the symptoms you have been experiencing. (often in trauma, these memories are stuck and the reprocessing works to ‘unstuck’ them).

Once we can start with desensitisation, this can involve various methods, the most common one is eye movements, but tapping may be more appropriate if there are eye issues or the actual movement creates pain in the eyes or a headache. There are other methods like hand buzzers or sound bars, but we will decide this in the session.

How does it feel afterwards?

Once we are finished, clients are advised there may still be some residual memories we may have in between sessions. You will be advised to keep a journal of this and return the information in the next session. You may feel tired, have a bit of a headache, etc. There may be nothing, but this will all be discussed in our consultation.

How many sessions?

This is difficult to say, this depends on how the client can reprocess these traumatic memories. It can take 3 or 4 session, but sometimes more.

It is a really amazing way to enable you, the client to process any trauma you may have experiences. This may have been in childhood or anything more recent. If you have any questions, please just send me an email and I will do my best to answer.
